LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — There’s no question most if not all kids love the pool no matter what time of year.

Drowning is the number one cause of death for accidental death for children,” says Theresa Carnes, owner of Goldfish Swim School in Lexington.

But that love can turn deadly.

Drowning is the second leading cause of death for kids 5 to 14.

Drowning related injuries can cause permanent brain damage, that’s why the American Association of Pediatrics, want your kids to swim sooner.

Next week, there’s a new school of fish in town, Carnes says parents don’t need to wait till summer vacation.

“It is never too early to prepare your kids to swim,” adds Carnes.

“It’s going to take 8 to 12 lessons to advance from one level to the next and another 8 to 12 to advance to the level after that,” he also says.

Goldfish Swim School is the first of it’s kind in the area, “we’re opening here in Lexington on January 16th.”

The school is located on 2520 Nicholasville Rd.
