LOUISVILLE, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW)- No. 9 Kentucky Volleyball is 0-1 on the season after dropping their opening match to No. 2 Nebraska by a score of 3-1.

Head Coach Craig Skinner’s team evened the match up at one set a piece after Nebraska took a 1-0 lead, but the Cornhuskers used momentum from a third set win to take the match in the fourth.

Despite the loss, UK had several glowing individual performances from key players. Sophomore Brooklyn DeLeye led the team in kills with 19 and senior Emma Grome had a team-high 42 assists.

For two other players, there is more encouraging news.

Brooke Bultema and Erin Lamb, who are coming into the season after injury troubles in 2023, had positive showings in the Cats’ opener. Lamb, who is in her senior season, had 14 kills which is second on the team behind DeLeye.

“This team has a lot of fight. We had nothing to lose coming into this game. We knew that we played a good first set. I really felt us come together. We played Kentucky Volleyball and trusted our shots and what we knew and had been training,” said Bultema.

Kentucky will return to action as they reopen Historic Memorial Coliseum on Friday August 30 at 6:30 p.m. versus Northern Kentucky.
