Group of voters organizes the “Kentucky Party” and announces Jill Stein for president campaign

FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Thursday afternoon a group of voters forming a new statewide independent party called the Kentucky Party made up by former Kentucky Democrats and Republicans announced a candidate for president under their line, to show up on the November ballot in all 120 counties.

The Kentucky Party says that forming a “political party” in the state requires a presidential candidate, in this case Jill Stein with the Green Party, 5,000 signatures from registered Kentucky voters and 2% of the vote in November.

On Thursday, those affiliated with the Kentucky Party spoke on their decision to nominate Stein, and their reasons at the Capitol Rotunda in Frankfort.

One member says it was about a political party that stood for the people of Kentucky, “The Kentucky Party is a tool, it’s meant for the use of every Kentuckian. This tool allows anyone in Kentucky to run for office without having to be a Democrat or a Republican,” said Geoff Sebesta who is a member.

Meantime, Mohammad Ahmad who leads the Ceasefire Now Covington Coalition is originally from Lexington and is also Palestinian spoke on the hardships his family overseas has endured because of the war, he added, “I stand with the new Kentucky Party that as you’ve heard stands for true values of justice and dignity that transcends politics, income, race, class and gender, because regardless of any differences, we may have on these issues which we will, as humans of course, we at least agree that Kentucky is worth fighting for, this state is worth fighting for.”

Kentucky is the 34th state with Jill Stein for president on the ballot.
