LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWSNOW) — The American Red Cross says they are at their lowest blood supply during the summer and are in critical need of donors.

This is due to regular blood donors leaving for vacation, taking care of kids over summer break, or simply taking time off for themselves.

Executive Director for the American Red Cross Blue Grass Chapter Lynne Washbish says they need for blood never goes away.

You never know when there’s going to be a tornado, a hurricane, or someone in a car accident,” she said. “That’s why we need to have it stocked on the shelves, so it’s there to help save lives.”

Washbish donates her own blood every 56 days, but even just one donation can save a life.

From now until July 31st, the American Red Cross has teamed up with Universal Pictures and is giving out a free ticket to see the movie ‘Twisters’ in theaters when you donate blood.

If you’re interested in donating, you can head to their website or call 1-800-REDCROSS for more information.
