A cold front brings changes for the weekend late Friday
Another sneak preview of fall is on the way with unseasonably cool temperatures starting Saturday
It was a nice Thursday by early September standards across Central and Eastern Kentucky with a mix of clouds and sunshine and warm high temperatures into the mid to upper 80s. With some moisture creeping back into the area on Wednesday the humidity levels stayed a bit elevated through the day so it felt a tad on the muggy side during the peak warmth of the afternoon. The warm to hot air will hang tough to close out the week but we’ve got some significant changes to our overall weather pattern heading into the weekend.
A much advertised cold front will drop through the Ohio Valley and into the commonwealth late on Friday. A southwest wind ahead of it should help push afternoon highs back into the upper 80s in most locations. As we get deeper into the afternoon the chances for isolated to scattered storms will increase but we aren’t looking at anything widespread so I really think these will be few and far between. Of course it is high school football Friday during the evening hours so there is a chance a few games could be impacted if we happen to see a few lightning strikes so that’s something to keep in mind if you are heading to one of the area games, including a big one over in Frankfort as North Laurel takes on Franklin County.
Timing is everything and it appears the cold front will clear the area heading into Saturday morning. The big story is that this front will be the leading edge of a fall-like air-mass that will settle into the commonwealth throughout the upcoming weekend. You should really feel the difference out the door on Saturday morning as a breezy northwest wind adds to the autumn feel. It should be delightful weather for any out door activities, including perfect “football weather” as the Cats take on South Carolina in their SEC opener at 3:30pm Saturday at Kroger Field (remember you can watch the game right here on ABC 36 if you can’t make it out there). With a mix of clouds and sunshine along with the brisk breeze, afternoon highs will only reach the low 70s, which will be some 15 degrees plus cooler than what we are expecting Friday afternoon for highs. Typically afternoon games at Kroger Field in early September can be a bit hot but not this time so enjoy.
We are looking at some chilly morning both Sunday and Monday as temperatures drop well into the 40s across the board. Most locations should bottom out in the mid to upper 40s but a few spots in the outlying areas could easily drop into the low 40s so a jacket or a sweater may come in handy if you are out early. Below are the record low temperatures for a few spots on Sunday morning.
It is early September so you know the cool air isn’t going to settle in permanently so if you aren’t quite ready for the fall-like air, there is a warm-up in sight. In fact temperatures should recover pretty quickly with afternoon highs surging back into the upper 80s as early as the middle part of next week. We are looking at another dry stretch which isn’t great news given that drought conditions have gone back the other way per the latest Drought Monitor out Thursday, which should much of Central Kentucky back to abnormally dry without much rain in sight.
